Election Day Thoughts

Tomorrow I am asking for your vote.  I would like to see Ottawa pay off its debt and develop a pay as you go policy.
Below is a comment made by someone on my blog.

Constructing a low dam/wier and a causeway/bridge by the Deschenes Rapids using material excavated from the transit tunnel is an excellent idea. Stabilizing the level of Lac Deschenes, generating power, providing a road connection - great multiple benefits. This would also be great for cyclists as it would connect pathways on both sides of the Ottawa River.

The issue of waste management and landfill is a major issue. Using modern techniques to generate energy from waste is another excellent idea. A google search of this topic will show that it is becoming more common place in Europe. There appears to be several technologies being used, one of which is being pioneered at the Trail Road Site.

You're saying things no one else has brought forward. Rather than seeing you as an outsider, you're the only one who really makes sense. You're not swayed by what's made popular by others. You have a vision that's different from the others, and it makes total sense. What you're talking about is taking care of business, and that's what we should be doing. You got my vote (about an hour ago).

  2. Has anyone considered the environmental impacts of building a dam at Deschenes? Or the destruction of a river feature that provides valuable recreation opportunities? This is an unrealistic and irresponsible proposition. As is the switch from landfills to waste incinerators. There is a reason waste incineration has not been adopted in Canada - the biproducts of waste incineration are some of the strongest carcinogenic compounds on earth. There is more to either of these arguments than has been addressed or even considered, and for that reason, I cannot take them seriously.

There is already a small dam/wier there....it is called the Deschenes Rapids! All that is needed is a low dam/weir to stabilize the level of lake Deschenes, which fluctuates by a few feet seasonally. This would IMPROVE recreation opportunities (ie boating), NOT destroy them as you indicate. This is not a Hydro Quebec mega project !!!

Composition of the waste byproducts depends on the combustion process. Some technologies use plasma to reduce waste at very high temperature (ever seen a plasma cutter in operation?). Given the population density in Europe, these techniques would not be permitted there if they posed severe health risks.

Look up weir and plasma and do some more research!

I cant believe their going ahead with the downtown O'Train. Where is a need identified for downtown rail? I ride the bus daily and the real need is to transport the working population from their suburban West, East and South Ottawa homes to the downtown core.

When does the current plan have that subruban connection phase? In 20 years? After we spend $3 billion on a system that we dont really need and put my generation and my kids generation into the biggest city debt situation we have ever seen.

Watson's going forward 'because its on the table and we'd have to do another EA' is a terrible reason to spend $3 billion. Terrible. If thats how you intend to manage a city Im sure I replace you with a well trained parrot.

How about looking at the numbers for once? How about reading a report or analysis? How about Jim Watson rides the bus and figures it out for himself because if thats what he thinks then he's disconnected from the average citizen of Ottawa.

    Get it together people!
