Answering Mr. Tennyson

Mr. Tennyson, wrote on my blog (www.andyhaydon.com) and he identified the problem of surface transportation. This is why a tunnel is proposed and supported by most taxpayers.

He took selective data from various specific transit systems to make his argument.  This skews the facts.
Ottawa’s existing Bus Rapid Transit is the best in North America as measured by the American Public Transit Association in rides per capita, 40% better than the next best, Calgary with an LRT system

According to the United States General Accounting Office, the United States Dept. of Transportation, The U.S. Transportation Research Board, The U.S. National Transit Database, The Canadian Fact Book, McCormick Rankin, and Toronto Transit System,
LRT operating costs per vehicle revenue mile vary from 2.19 to 2.96 times more expensive than Bus Rapid Transit

By the way BRT is faster.
LRT with transfers will result in rider ship loss and slower speeds.

The real LRT story:
Denver has an additional 0.8 sales tax to pay for their scaled back LRT system.
Portland’s revenue from fare box is 15% - the taxpayers pay the rest.
Welcome to LRT and Poverty
Andy

  1. I would like to see what the modal share would be once a ring road is built, bus lanes are turned into HOV-2 lanes, and a better supply of parking is made downtown. We currently have good ridership only because of so many restriction on motorists. We've made a poor transit service look good only by these motorist restrictions. Quite pathetic in my mind.

This statement is totally irrelevant and is just another smear tactic to make our current transit system look bad. The purpose of mass transit is to make it easier for people to leave their cars at home and NOT take them down town.
